Student View: A work experience day with IBM

Sarah, a student from the John Henry Newman School, attended an IBM business & technology work experience day last term. This was her first time at an event like this so we asked her how she prepared for the day and how she found it.

Sarah was successful in gaining a placement for the day and said that she really appreciated the encouragement and advice Uptree offered in the lead up so that she felt 'comfortable and psyched' for the day. She said,

Even though it was my first work experience event, I was given all the tools needed to feel adjusted for what the day had in store for me.

IBM is a global technology company and during the day they showed Sarah and the other students the range of different career paths that can be taken within the organisation.

Sarah said she particularly enjoyed learning from existing graduates’ stories because it meant that she could get a first-hand experience and opinion on their lifestyle and their work combined.

This specially chosen cohort of just 30 Uptree students also took part in a business & technology group challenge. This allowed them to see their own capabilities in areas they hadn't realised before and practise skills such as team work, communication and innovative thinking.

Finally, we asked Sarah if she had any advice for students in her position and she shared her thoughts:

When going to these events always have an open mind. Be a good listener and try to visualise yourself as speakers talk to see if what they offer you in the company is suitable for you.

We wish Sarah all the best as she continues her studies and we're excited to see what the future holds for this talented young lady.
