Uptree's Summer Careers Course: our impact

How did you first learn to write a job application? When did you learn how to deal with a conflict at work? Did anyone ever give you tips for finding work experience?

We know that for young people it can be difficult to gain the skills needed to embark on a successful career. This is why this summer we were very excited to deliver our first ever Summer Careers Course: six weeks of workshops to support students to boost their employability and bridge the gap between education and employment.

‘I loved how interactive the session was. I felt comfortable enough to ask questions which I don’t normally do! I found it so useful so thank you so much!’

During the school holidays, we delivered 12 workshops, each 75 minutes. We started in week one with ‘First Impressions and Networking’ and ending in week six with ‘Starting Work’.

Over the course, we saw 140 different students from nearly 90 schools across the UK, with 29 students completing the whole course to gain their Summer Careers Course Certificate.

‘I enjoyed learning about how my personality should be applied to my future work career and I also became less anxious with choosing the correct career to best suit myself.’

Over half of these students were new to Uptree, so we hope this is the start of a long engagement in careers education and we look forward to seeing them at some of our work experience events this term.

A huge well done to all the students who took part, particularly those who completed the course.

Do you have any students who could benefit from a similar course? We’re excited to announce that this term, we are starting Get Employed - weekly after school workshops aimed at final year students and school leavers who are looking to apply to early career opportunities in 2021.

From 13 October, we will be delivering workshops looking at tailoring applications to specific companies, how to succeed in an assessment centre and practicing key interview techniques. Find out more at uptree.co/events/uptree
