Amarjeet’s success story

Amarjeet started using Uptree towards the end of year 12 when she was looking for work experience.

“I was looking for work experience because I didn’t have any and so I came across the Uptree website and then through that I realised that they had so many more opportunities and events in person and I was more looking for more in person things rather than virtual.”

After applying for a couple of events, Amarjeet was accepted onto Uptree’s FuturesUP event hosted at A&O Shearman.

“I learnt quite a few things there about apprenticeships in general, applying to programmes, how to present myself in interviews, networking, etc. and the application was very simple.”

At the FuturesUP event, Amarjeet received guidance on how to apply to roles.

“I never knew much about apprenticeships. I was told about them but I had to kind of do my own research as no one around me had done apprenticeships before. I have a sibling that applied, but he never got in. There wasn’t enough guidance for me, I didn’t have anyone to give me advice on how to actually get into an apprenticeship. At that point I had looked for apprenticeships but I didn’t actually apply to them.”

“They gave us a lot of guidance. Speaking to everyone, even the people that came to attend the event themselves that were around my age and learning about their experience was good as well. There were some people that were in a gap year and were talking about how they can reapply, I didn’t even know you could reapply to apprenticeships. They gave general advice as well on how I should do my application and I just got to connect with other companies as well on LinkedIn.”

Uptree are so pleased to hear that these events helped Amarjeet identify which employers she wanted to apply to.

“I applied for apprenticeships with the financial companies that were at FuturesUP. For example, I applied to BDO and got to the assessment centre, but it didn’t work out. I think that was a good experience for me though. I realised how to present myself in those assessment centres. Then after that, I got the assessment centre for KPMG for which I got offered a place.”

Amarjeet is currently completing her Audit Apprenticeship at KPMG. It’s a 5 year programme that will end with her receiving a Level 7 ACA.
