Student Success Story: Being a young carer and pursuing a career in Law

Alexander is an A-level student - studying Economics, Geography and History - with a passion for the legal industry.

Currently undertaking a placement on the Clifford Chance ACCESS scheme, Alexander has taken the time to write-up about his experience and also offer advice for other students looking to pursue a career in law.

Tell us about your Uptree journey

I joined Uptree in February. I heard about Uptree through a friend's recommendation as a platform for work experience.

I attended a number of work experience events with great companies, including Magic Circle law firm Clifford Chance, VoucherCodes (Digital Marketing), Equitix (Fund Management & Investment), KPMG (Professional Services), plus Uptree's multi-industry networking event FuturesUP Festival.

Well done to Alexander for his proactivity! Attending a variety of work experience days like these gives young people the opportunities to build professional networks and develop workplace skills - Team Uptree

Why did you choose to apply for the ACCESS scheme?

Clifford Chance run set up their pioneering Access Scheme as an introduction to the legal sector a first step towards a training contract. It is a two-year development programme aimed at talented students who want to have a career in law.

I applied to the ACCESS Scheme to support my university application. I was given a comprehensive, introductory presentation about the proceedings of an M&A transaction by a partner at the firm.

I worked in a team to prepare and perform a pitch to a potential client (hypothetical), concerning an acquisition transaction in which they were buying 100% shares in a company.I also took part in a workshop titled ‘How to Present’ where I advocated my team’s discussions on confidence and making a positive impact.

We were really lucky to hear from two in-house solicitors from Deutsche Bank, discussing what an in-house solicitor would do when working for a bank, record label, charity, or housing association.

Another exciting part of the programme was when we discussed a case study from an in-house solicitor’s perspective which was an email from a client concerning a non-disclosure agreement. This sort of activity helps you develop the critical thinking skills needed for a career in law. We also discussed the next steps of a client in relation to a breach of contract case study.

I enjoyed learning about limited liability companies in comparison with sole traders and typical examples of legal problems they each face. Lastly, we listened to an introduction to the basics of litigation, alternative dispute resolution, arbitration and contract law from a partner at the firm.

Did you face any challenges during this placement?

I have been a young carer for my mum who has Multiple Sclerosis (MS) since secondary school, so balancing that role with this was quite difficult but fortunately I was able to manage it and make the most of this opportunity with Clifford Chance.

Everyone has difficulties so do what you can to overcome them to the best of your abilities.

My advice to other students is to take every opportunity you can!

Also, work hard. Working hard is the most important thing. As vague as it sounds...

Diligence is the most powerful tool that someone, who wants to be successful, can have.
There is so much competition in the career path of law, so being the hardest worker among the competition is what will set you apart, and allow you to achieve your aspirations.
