Student View: GSK Application Masterclass (online)

GSK is a science-led global healthcare company with a mission to help people to do more, feel better, live longer. GSK is one of the few healthcare companies researching both medicines and vaccines for the World Health Organisation’s three priority diseases – HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria and have developed some of the leading global medicines in these fields.

GSK has many STEM apprenticeship available to join their company and at the end of March they hosted an online Application Masterclass for students interested in these types of roles.

Monica from the Frances Bardsley Academy attended the session and has shared her experience of the event and the insights that she gained.

What did you gain from the GSK Application Masterclass?

I found this experience extremely informative and I feel like it gave me the confidence to apply to such a place as GSK. Before the event, I didn't realise how essential it is to develop a personal brand and how to network. However, now I feel like I can do this because of the help that was provided.

I honestly feel a lot more prepared for when it is my time to apply at GSK, as the event gave me interviewing tips and information about the company that I wouldn't have been able to get if I didn't attend GSK's application masterclass.

Josh from GSK's Early Talent Recruitment team talks through his top tips

What was it like taking part in an online event?

Although this event was virtual (because of the COVID-19 outbreak), I still felt the enthusiasm and passion of the partners. They definitely knew what they were talking about! We were able to ask questions freely in the Q&A section and all of them were answered so it was as interactive as it could be online.

I heard from placement employees from different fields of work, and from the apprentices. Even though their experience of work was different from each other, when it came to the culture of GSK they all said that it was great. Hearing from them only inspired me to reach that level of success.

Do you have any advice for other students like you in lockdown?

To any students who feel nervous about joining an online event, honestly just go for it! I was nervous as well joining my first event, but I was more engaged with what I was learning so my nerves went away.

If you are very nervous, then you can always write down any questions you may have before hand, you could even switch off your camera and type them in during the session. But the main thing is to focus on what you want to achieve during the session and be yourself.

Uptree thanks Monica for taking the time to share her thoughts on this masterclass and we wish her all the best in her career journey.
