About the Project Manager Apprenticeship.
In order to apply to MI6 Project Manager Apprenticeship, you must meet the following qualifying criteria:
- GCSE English Language and Mathematics at Grade 4/C or above, or an equivalent qualification.
Beyond this, you don’t need a specific academic background or any previous project management experience. Maybe you considered university and chose a different path, or perhaps you're bringing life experience rather than formal qualifications. What matters most is that you're eager to learn, can communicate clearly, and enjoy helping to organise and coordinate complex pieces of work.
Salary: £26,043
Flexible working: The apprenticeship has a set timetable for academic modules with fixed leave periods. Due to the secure nature of MI6's work, much of your learning and working will be in person. Home working is unlikely and would only be considered in exceptional circumstances, subject to business and team requirements.
MI6's, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), mission is to protect the security and economic wellbeing of the UK from overseas threats such as regional instability, terrorism, and cyber-attacks. Working across the globe and in close partnership with MI5 and GCHQ, they help the Government to counter these threats through the provision of secret intelligence. A role in MI6 will see you providing vital support to this work, within a supportive and encouraging environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.
Are you organised, quick to spot what needs doing next, and good at making sure nothing gets missed? A career in project management could be where you flourish. On our first-ever Project Management Apprenticeship, you will contribute to real projects, and work towards a fully funded Level 4 Project Manager qualification.
Over 18 months, you’ll spend four days a week, Monday to Thursday, working directly with project teams. You’ll produce project plans, write status reports, take minutes, manage agendas, track progress and work with project data. You’ll also gain experience supporting project budgets, resources and risk management while working with a range of stakeholders and colleagues. It’s about helping people organise complex work and communicate clearly, skills that count for a lot in a national security context.
Some of the work will be IT-related, some won’t be. You’ll move across different business areas, teams and delivery streams, giving you a genuine feel for what project delivery looks like before deciding what interests you most.
Every Friday is a dedicated day for learning. You’ll be able to attend online sessions, build your portfolio, work on coursework and prepare for your end-point assessment. Throughout your journey, you’ll have support from your placement manager, colleagues, and a mentoring and coaching network. You’ll also have access to an established community of apprentices and early careers colleagues who’ve been in your position.
In addition to training and development, you'll receive a starting salary of £26,043, 25 days' annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years), an interest-free season ticket loan, and access to on-site facilities including a gym, restaurant and coffee bars at some sites.
We are proud of our inclusive and supportive working environment. Our workplace encourages open minds and attitudes, helping you feel comfortable bringing your whole self to work. As organisations committed to providing equitable opportunities, we value and nurture your wellbeing and talent, supporting you to reach your full potential. Additionally, we have a range of thriving affinity networks led by staff that champion awareness around gender, ethnic minority, disability, neurodiversity, LGBTQ+ and more.
At MI6 diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from ethnic minority backgrounds, people with disabilities, and those from low socio-economic backgrounds. Find out more about our culture, working environment and diversity on our website.
To be eligible to apply, you must be a British Citizen. If you hold dual nationality, of which one component is British, you’ll nonetheless be considered. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. You can apply at the age of 17; if successful, you’ll not be offered a start date prior to your 18th birthday. Full eligibility details can be found on our website.
