Student success: Tegan's story

Tell us about your Uptree experience

I attended an Uptree Work Experience Day at Shawbrook Bank in March 2022 which gave me first hand experience of working at the company. I then went on to apply for the Thrive Finance Apprenticeship scheme with Shawbrook Bank and was delighted to be accepted.

Tell us about your role

My experience with Shawbrook Bank has enabled me to explore the different departments within a company, such as sales and marketing. This has helped me discover the areas of the finance industry that interests me the most.

I chose an apprenticeship route over university as I felt that an apprenticeship provided greater benefits, such as learning whilst gaining experience. An apprenticeship also provides a hands-on approach which suits my personal learning style.

Typically, I’ll spend four days in the office with one day for studying. However this can vary depending on what suits your own personal learning style.

Did you experience any setbacks?

Setbacks are inevitable when applying for jobs, however, you should embrace the fear and anxiety you feel towards these setbacks. These setbacks help you learn how to improve and develop. Whilst initially it may be discouraging, the ability to accept them and move on only acts as a further opportunity to become more resilient and learn how to persevere. A positive mindset is essential to becoming a motivated individual.

Do you have any advice for students in a similar situation to you who are also interested in a similar career path?

A key piece of advice I would give is that it’s okay to not know what career you want to pursue. I spent countless hours trying to figure out the right path for me. Applying to various jobs, gaining experience of applications and interviews allows you to develop essential employability skills and gain more experience and knowledge in various fields. This helps you develop your own understanding of what you may want to do with your future. Most importantly, don’t give up in the face of adversity.

A big thank you to Tegan for her insightful article and we wish her all the best in her future career!
