Have a question about our Work Experience events?

Check out our frequently asked questions below.

If you still can't find what you're looking for, contact Uptree at educationteam@uptree.co

Where do I find Uptree Work Experience?

All our Work Experience opportunities are found on the events page of the Uptree website. You will need to be logged into your Uptree account to apply for a place.

I don’t have an Uptree account – how can I get started?

To apply for Work Experience, you need to sign up for a free Uptree account here. To get started you'll just need your name and email address, but there are extra questions you'll have to complete when you start applying for events.

Once you've created your account you'll receive an email to activate your account - don't forget to click the link in the email and then you'll be ready to apply to your first events!

If you have any trouble creating your account, please contact us using the chat function at the bottom of the page.

Who is Work Experience for?

This varies from event to event - any criteria, such as location or year group will be detailed at the top of the work experience event page.

The majority of the experiences we offer are aimed at students aged 16-18, although we do have some events for students from the age of 14 and a few up to university ages.

If you meet the event criteria and you're enthusiastic about a particular company or industry, we'd love you to apply.

How competitive is it and when will I hear if I'm successful?

Many of our events have limited places - this is detailed on the event page - so can be very competitive, particularly for popular industries like law.

To make sure you're in the best chance of gaining a place, make sure you meet all the criteria for the event and then write a high quality application statement, explaining why you should attend.

We begin prioritisation for most events 2-3 weeks before they take place, so you should hear back from us about your application around then.

The event requires A-level grades, but I haven't sat my exams yet.

Don't worry, just submit your predicted grades and tick the box to declare this. If you don't have official predicted grades yet, please enter your best guess at what you'd attain.

If you're studying towards different qualifications, please enter these.

I can no longer attend a Work Experience event, what do I do?

Let us know as soon as possible by emailing educationteam@uptree.co or updating your event page status from your Uptree profile, and we will pass on your spot to someone on the waiting list. Unless it is an emergency, any last minute cancellations may result in your account being suspended for three months.

If you still want to attend a future event with this employer, go to their company page and click to follow them - you'll then be notified the next time they are hosting a Work Experience event with Uptree.

Will travel costs be covered?

Unfortunately in most cases we cannot cover travel costs to our Work Experience events. If you need support to attend, please read through our FAQ about travel support.

What do I get if I attend a Work Experience event?

For most Work Experience you successfully complete, you will earn a certificate of completion which can be saved in your personal record of achievement. Certificates can also be shared on your LinkedIn and added to your professional profile. You could also share on other social media channels too, so don't forget to tag us!

What happens once I register?

You'll receive a confirmation email acknowledging your application. If you can't find the email in your main inbox, make sure to check the spam/junk folder of your emails and make sure to mark Uptree as a safe sender to avoid this happening in the future.

Then, keep an eye on your inbox for any updates. We usually shortlist for events 2-3 weeks in advance and you'll be asked to reconfirm your place if you are successful.

Once you've confirmed your place, you'll receive further joining information via email and text. If you do not confirm your place, you will not be able to attend.

If an event is over subscribed, you may end up on the waiting list. Unless you hear further from us, you do not have a place on the work experience day so please do not attend. However, if a space comes available, you may then be invited. Keep an eye on your emails in case you are offered a place. You will not need to re-confirm your place in this case.

How can I edit or improve my application?

Unfortunately there is no way to update or edit your application, but if applications are still open, you can delete it and start again. To delete your application, go to the event page and you'll see the option at the top of the page.

Beware that we do shortlist applications up to three weeks in advance, so if you reapply after this point your replacement application may not get reviewed.

What will I do on the day?

This varies from event to event, but an example Work Experience agenda could look like:

  • Welcome and icebreaker activities
  • Introduction to the company
  • Interactive sessions
  • Lunch
  • Q&A panel with professionals
  • Information on application routes and next steps

For more information, check out the event page for the Work Experience you are interested in.

Do I need to prepare anything?

Usually, no. But if you do, it will be sent out in advance with other joining information.

However, it always reflects well on you if you've prepared any questions for Q&A sessions or panels if they are part of the agenda.

What shall I wear?

Dress smartly — think business casual or professional. You’re representing yourself and getting a taste of professional environments. This could be a smart pair of trousers or skirt, paired with a shirt or smart top. Ties tend to be optional and trainers and hoodies are to be avoided. Any specific dress codes will be shared via email in the run up to the work experience once your place has been confirmed.

Make sure whatever you wear, you feel comfortable. For more information, check out this advice from Indeed.

I need support to help me attend on the day.

If you have any access or support needs, please contact the Uptree team as soon as your place has been confirmed on the Work Experience event and we will do our best to accommodate this.

For example, this could be that you need any resources printed in colour due to dyslexia.

Will photos or videos be taken?

Yes, our event hosts usually take photos on the day. These are sent round to participants in our follow up email.

If you'd rather opt out from photos, please let the Uptree host know at the start of the Work Experience event.

I've not received any communication about the event.

You should have received a confirmation email when you submitted your application. If you haven't received this, check your email spam/junk folder for any missed emails. If you do find us in your spam/junk, make sure to mark Uptree as a safe sender to make sure this doesn't happen again.

If you still haven't received anything, check your Uptree profile to make sure your application has been correctly submitted. You'll be able to see under 'upcoming events' which events you have applied to and your status for them.

If you're waiting to hear back about your application after successful submission, you should hear if you have been shortlisted 2-3 weeks before the event. Again, you can check your application status through your profile. You probably won't hear from Uptree earlier than 3 weeks before an event.

I haven't received the link for a virtual event.

We send out the link for virtual events three days in advance. If you still haven't received the link by then, make sure to check your email spam/junk folder for any missed emails. If you do find us in your spam/junk make sure to mark Uptree as a safe sender to make sure this doesn't happen again.

If you still can't find an email with the link, please email educationteam@uptree.co .

Where can I find my certificate?

When you're logged into your Uptree account, visit your profile page, then click 'Activities' and you'll be able to download certificates for any Work Experience events you have attended.

I've applied to lots of events but I still haven't been successful. How can I get a place?

First, make sure you clearly meet event criteria. If an event says it is in the North West, we generally only offer places to students based in the North West. Likewise, if an event is for Year 13s, we are unlikely to shortlist students in other year groups or who have finished school.

Once you meet criteria, make sure you write a good answer to the question 'why do you want to attend'? Make sure to mention the company and industry and what you're going to get out of the day - will it help you develop particular skills or help you in your pursuit of a particular career?

Finally, make sure your application is submitted at least three weeks before the event takes place - if you apply after this, your application may not get reviewed as we may have already shortlisted applications if events are over subscribed.

What is a Golden Ticket code and how can I get one?

You don't need a Golden Ticket code to apply to an event, but these are handed out to individuals in certain circumstances: for example if you have previously attended a specific event. If you don't have one, don't worry!

How can I nominate a friend?

Under certain circumstances, we will invite you to nominate a friend to join you at a Work Experience event. We will give you a Golden Ticket code for your friend to apply with. Please note this does not guarantee either of you a place at the event - you will both still need to meet event criteria, but both you and your friend will get priority review.

If you have not received an invitation to nominate a friend for an event, you can't do this. However, you can encourage your friend to apply anyway, we'd love to meet them!
