A group of students in a workshop

Student view: #FuturesUP online

#FuturesUP is a multi-industry, networking event which takes place annually across different regions in the UK and 3 times a year in London. Watch an overview video here: https://youtu.be/GWa0l3xz8dw .

In early March, #FuturesUP was to be hosted at Clifford Chance's offices with a focus on careers in law, the professional services and STEM. However, all the attending companies and students had to make last-minute changes because of the social distancing measures and thus, #VirtualFuturesUP was born!

Using video conferencing technology, we ran six, 30-minute, interactive, virtual panels focused on careers in different industry areas. Students took part from their homes and were able to send in their questions to be answered by key professionals from 12 different companies.

Kieran, from the Haberdasher’s Askes’ Hatcham College, was one of those students and here he gives us an overview of what the event was like.

Which of the six panel talks did you attend?

I stayed for both the Technology and Engineering panel talks. Within that 1 hour, I learnt so much more information regarding the industries I plan on involving myself with in the future. I’d like to thank Uptree for such an invaluable experience!

How were they helpful to you?

The professionals at GSK , ARM and IBM were extremely helpful in providing essential knowledge on how to enter the industry, the possible pathways one can take to get a placement there and other useful know-how’s like, for example, looking out for key developments within the technology industry to make you a more promising candidate for future jobs.

Kieran is interested in computing, the sciences and psychology

I believe that events like these really do help you out in terms of obtaining knowledge on future pathways and showing interest by attending these webinars – In fact anything you do related to your future career shows interest! For example, going to actual programmes or asking for work experience is equally a powerful way to show passion for your career.

Your advice to other students?

I plan on looking out for future webinars like the one I had attended, and I hope that to those reading this: I implore you to do the same! There’s so much you can gain from simply tuning into one of these Q&A’s, and best of all, it’s free!

Uptree thanks Kieran for taking the time to share his experience with us and wishes him all the best in his studies and future career path.
